NOTE: That is my entry - late entry - on the Carnival of Journalism, a collection of blogs writing on a single topic, organized by Spot.us creator David Cohn. It is a revival of the Carnival and this primary, returningedition, the niche is "The changing role of universities with the information needs of an community." I decided to approach it from my recent experience in the academic world, following my own time inside the newsroom. Classrooms, meet newsrooms.I'm sure you've known one, tolerated each other as well as have talked smack about one another for several years. But there's more, both of you need each other.Therefore you both should change, adapt and evolve fast
That's my conclusion while i start my fourth semester in academia, after A decade in newsrooms. (With the record, I would not consider myself an "academic." I like the phrase "hackademic." Actually, I prefer Web journalist.)I know in newsrooms we're busy making the daily miracle (every Fifteen minutes online) and they are always short on resources. Were around the industry leading of content evolution online, but we don't have enough time, money and,sometimes, the abilities we need to experiment and grow. We can don't have support on the top either.Truth be told, we regularly dismiss academics ("those who can't, teach") and still have some issues collaborating with anyone, whether consequently another newsroom or even a university.I know in classrooms we set up more and more (while individuals do not find it) utilizing aspiring journalists. These students are the future of journalism on the good day, but you're dismissed as clueless dreamers for a bad day - categorised as both by people inside newsroom.I'm sure how the "students" who fill our classrooms won't be students, but journalists. And, while they are flanked by haters (from parents to working journalists to even professors), this force of youngjournalists cannot be stopped. Good think.I also be aware that in academia there exists some time to think. We certainly have more of their time to reflect and share those thoughts. We actively are discussing journalism... and some probably have not practiced it in some time. Does which means that their analysis is invalid? No... however, many people do dismiss it.
Often, however, not always, academia has usage of grants and a lot more funding. My jaw has dropped when I've heard of the amount of money funding some projects that didn't deliver. I realize in newsrooms quite a lot of uswould make miracles happen by using a fraction of the money.However, when funding has for something innovative, well, some in academia haven't innovated in a while. Don't get me wrong, There's no doubt that day spa san francisco professors who're "getting it" than leaders inside newsroom. A classroom, in reality, is really a newsroom rich in hungry journalists who don't wish to mention journalism... they want to apply it.Professors should empower these people to supply work, not just because of their class, as well as the community. These pieces shouldn't be read solely by the pack leader standing in front with the classroom. They should be read by the public. And as there are cutbacks within our newsrooms, journalism classrooms should help fill that void.
Folks in newsrooms really need to join forces with the classroom.
